Benefits of Integrating ICT School Curriculum

Information and communication technology (ICT) has been included in the school curriculum today. Unlike in the past where ICT was introduced outside the classroom, today ICT is part of the learning process.   ICT use in the classroom has changed the role of teachers as well as the learning outcomes. It has created new learning environments.

Teachers need adequate preparation in order to integrate ICT teaching strategies in their course delivery. They have had to adjust to new curriculums and they have to adopt the evolving technology. Where teachers are lacking in the skill training is necessary.  ICT teaching requires planning for lessons by identifying and selecting relevant ICT resources such as programs and websites. These resources are important in facilitating teaching.  ICT evolves rapidly and teachers have to keep in step with such advance and adopt the new ICT resources and technology in their teaching.

Further, ICT teachers have to encourage students to use emerging technologies such as blogs and networks to reflect and discuss their studies and tasks.  Incorporating ICT in teaching comes with many benefits for both the teacher and the students.

Here are some of the benefits.

  1. ICT Facilitates a Learner-Centered Approach

ICT has shifted teaching and learning from a teacher-centered to a learner-centered model. The teacher has ceased to be a sole voice of authority throughout the learning process.   The teacher is now a facilitator, a coach or a mentor. The teacher guides the students to explore, learn, and create solutions using ICT.

  1. Active Learning and Active Engagement

ICT is an active learning tool. It mobilizes examination tools, analysis, and calculation. It provides an avenue for student inquiry, research, analysis, and creation of new information.  Students learn as they interact with the ICT. They learn to solve life problems and to generate relevant to real-life situations.  ICT rids the culture of rote memorization and learning as the students are actively involved in the learning process. It encourages creativity and innovation.

  1. Collaborative Learning

ICT has allowed wider interaction and cooperation. Students and teachers can interact with their counterparts from all over the world. They can link with experts easily. It also allows collaborations with persons and experts in other fields.  ICT provides learners with the opportunity to share knowledge with people of different backgrounds and explore different approaches to their study areas. This widens the scope of learning of the learner.  ICT helps to improve teachers and students global awareness, communication, and interaction skills. They are able to appreciate different cultures.

  1. ICT Encourages Creative Learning

ICT provides a vast amount of information. The learner is not localized to what is written in books and journals.   As such, learners and teachers are able to manipulate information and existing data to create appropriate products.  Creative manipulation of information leads to innovations of creative products that are suitable for real-life use.

  1. It Promotes Evaluative Learning

ICT integrated learning is diagnostic in nature. It seeks to motivate the students and the teachers to identify real-life problems and to generate their solutions.  ICT allows teachers and learners to discover and explore as many pathways to solving life problems as possible.   As an ICT teacher, you need adequate preparation. You need to seek appropriate skills to incorporate ICT teaching in your course delivery. Moreover, ICT is not static. It advances fast. Therefore, continuous training is paramount. Enroll in short courses and tutorials and improve your skills.
